Is Your Cake Smashing?

With all you have read, heard and seen regarding the ceremonious cutting of the cake, it is a wonder you are not confused on the day of the big event. If you are a traditionalist, this article might not be for you. Not to say that traditionalists are wrong in any way, shape or form. Traditionalists can give the exact spot of where to stand, when the perfect photo-op will occur, and exactly how you should stand in proximity to one another. If you are looking for a memorable experience, you will not need to follow any specific direction.

Many couples make the fatal mistake of cutting the cake off to the side, or in the back of a reception hall. No only will people miss this joyous ceremony, but they may not even be aware it is happening. Try to make yourself center stage during the cutting of the cake.
Your photographer should not have to “pose” both of you. A good photographer will be taking photos throughout the cake cutting. Do not worry about posing for the photographer-it will break up the ceremony.
Do you smash?
A fairy new, and not as widely accepted, tradition has begun to take place. Many non-traditionalists believe that whoever smashes the most cake in their partner’s face will have the most control in the marriage. Others believe if the bride becomes angry after the groom smashes cake in her face, then he will need to spend the first year learning to know her emotions better.
Another up and coming tradition is to have the bride and groom each grab a piece of cake (without measuring) to see who ends up with the larger piece of cake. The one who has the larger piece of cake, has more control.
Regardless of whether you decide beforehand, or even at the moment of, the cutting of the cake should capture your personality and your commitment to one another (hopefully this is captured by your photographer too). In addition, even if you decide to follow a traditional cake cutting ceremony, your personality, and interaction as couple is what will be on center stage.
As with the rest of the wedding day activities, it is most important to relax and let things fall where they may. However, if you are adamantly against cake smashing, you might want to mention it to your fiancé before the wedding. If not, you may be stuck with an experience you wish was not so uniquely yours!
