It gets smashed into mouths, fed to one another lovingly, and sometimes, crushed under the feet of dancing guests. It can be fabulously ornate or elegant and plain. Some have rivers of champagne; others flow with decadent chocolate. Whatever the preference, today’s couples trying to find their perfect wedding cake are limited only by their imaginations.
Current Wedding Cake Trends
Some of the more outlandish trends in wedding cakes today include the following:
Right now, perhaps the hottest wedding cake style includes lace and beading made from sugar. A designer and bride favorite, this look is typically paired with cascading sugar flowers and is well-suited for more traditional receptions. Icing can be created using many ingredients, from standard sugar excesses to organic and even vegan and in multiple colors. Gone are the days of pure white wedding cakes; today’s brides are taking chances and expressing themseves with cakes created in pastels and shocking pinks.
Fun & Funky Cakes
If cakes in extreme colors aren’t your style, perhaps a better way to stay cutting-edge in wedding confections would be opting for fun, funky wedding cake shapes: a big seller is the “cupcake cake” designed from multiple cupcakes created on a varying-height pedestal, built to resemble a traditional round cake.
Still incredibly popular are grooms cakes surrounding the standard-bearing larger, stacked version. They tend toward whimsy and revolve around his personal interests or hobbies.
But Not Required….
…currently on the outs when it comes to wedding cakes? Plastic toppers. While planning their weddings, today’s brides are choosing porcelain figurines that sit alongside, rather than on, the cake.
Flavors are another area where wedding cakes are being turned upside-down, figuratively speaking. The usual white, chocolate and red velvet are being usurped by Grand Marnier drizzled orange cake, Kahlua and tiramisu flavors. Even standard white cake is no longer limited: vanilla bean cakes and Bavarian cream centers are gaining in popularity.
You Choose
Couples who really want to push the envelope are opting for the truly offbeat – cakes that are not circular or even, but uniquely-shaped and crooked, often without any tiers at all. Other options include personalization. Some cakes are designed to match the style and look of the bridal gown, others are made of dougnuts. It’s all about preferences.
Whatever the bride and groom’s passions, interest and styles, there’s certainly a cake and designer out there that’s as perfect for them as they are for each other.
